'Portrait of a Cardinal' by Raphael This is the source image for the Cardinal's Head solar etchings and other images in the series of Heads. The original painting by Raphael (1483–1520) is dated 1510-11. The red cape and hat identify the figure as a cardinal. His identity has remained unknown, however he was probably one of the more important people in the court of Pope Julius II. He might be Cardinal Francesco Alidosi, whom the humanist Bembo described with the cutting words, "Faith meant nothing to him, nor religion, nor trustworthiness, nor shame, and there was nothing in him that was holy."Cardinal's head exhibitionFor a review of the exhibition and photos from the opening, go to http://www.artistmann.com/cardinalshead
